Chick-fil-A Maintains Family Roots Amid Rapid U.S. and Global Growth

Chick-fil-A has broadened its presence far beyond the Southeastern United States, reaching markets as distant as Singapore and the United Kingdom. Despite the rapid expansion, CEO Andrew Cathy emphasizes the company’s commitment to remaining a family-owned business, upholding the values set by its founder, S. Truett Cathy.

Leadership Transition and Industry Challenges Nearly five years ago, Andrew Cathy took over as CEO from his father, Dan Cathy, navigating the company through an inflationary environment and increased competition in the chicken restaurant segment. While the overall fast-food sector has seen traffic decline and weaker results from major players like McDonald’s, Popeyes, and KFC, Chick-fil-A has largely avoided similar downturns.

Speaking in Manhattan ahead of an event to promote the chain’s Shared Table hunger relief program, Andrew Cathy described 2026 as “a good year”. He credited the chain’s operators for strong execution and maintaining a hospitable atmosphere that resonates with customers.

Financial Performance and Growth Strategy As a private entity, Chick-fil-A does not disclose quarterly earnings publicly, but franchise filings show a 14% revenue increase to $10.3 billion in 2025 and a 1% rise in net income to $1.05 billion. The company’s roughly 3,000 locations generated $23.92 billion in system sales last year, ranking it third among U.S. restaurant chains by sales, behind only McDonald’s and Starbucks.

The chain has no plans for an initial public offering or external investment. Instead, it favors a measured, conservative approach to expansion. Last year, Chick-fil-A opened 179 new restaurants and has recently entered international markets, including Canada, Singapore, and the U.K.

Advantages of Remaining Private Staying private allows Chick-fil-A to plan long-term rather than focusing on short-term quarterly results, especially relevant in a year marked by struggles among publicly traded restaurant stocks. For example, shares of Jersey Mike’s declined by nearly 28% since its July IPO, while Inspire Brands, owner of Dunkin’, postponed its public offering due to sector headwinds.

Innovation and Tradition Under Andrew Cathy’s leadership, Chick-fil-A has pursued ambitious initiatives such as a $1 billion international growth plan and the launch of Daybright, a beverage-centric restaurant concept from its venture arm. Nevertheless, the company balances innovation with its core values.

Cathy likened managing the business to driving a race car, saying the focus remains primarily forward, with constant awareness of its foundation. Certain practices, like closing on Sundays, remain unchanged, while others, including the chain’s signature Southern hospitality, continue to adapt to evolving customer preferences.

Technology and Customer Experience Chick-fil-A embraces a “human plus” approach to technology, blending digital tools with personal service. Cathy highlighted ongoing exploration of future food delivery methods, including drone technology, but confirmed the chain will not implement AI-powered voice ordering in drive-thrus, differentiating itself from competitors such as McDonald’s, which announced plans to test AI-driven order taking in multiple languages.

“We want that hospitality to be human to human,” Cathy stated, emphasizing the importance of interpersonal connection in the customer experience.

Industry Trends in Hospitality Several restaurant chains are renewing their focus on hospitality to retain customers amid changing behaviors. Starbucks, for instance, supplied baristas with Sharpies to add personal messages on coffee cups. Burger King redefined its manager role to emphasize guest engagement, while McDonald’s launched a training program called “Make It Golden,” emphasizing hospitality alongside food quality.

Customer Satisfaction Leadership Chick-fil-A’s longstanding dedication to service has earned it the top spot in customer satisfaction among fast-food chains for over a decade, according to the American Customer Satisfaction Index. Although Jersey Mike’s recently surpassed Chick-fil-A in the 2026 rankings, Chick-fil-A maintained stable scores year over year.

Menu Simplicity and Expansion The chain’s menu remains notably simple but has expanded cautiously with limited-time seasonal items such as chicken and waffles and the Honey Pepper Pimento Chicken Sandwich. Successful additions may become permanent fixtures, as demonstrated by the Pineapple Dragonfruit drink.
